Here is a link from CNN about the lack of people using built in Navigation in their cars and just using their phones instead. Good read link

All of the reasons stated are exactly why I love having a carpc with my choice of NAV software and always current maps. If I have a final destination plugged into the dash and want to take a little detour to a restaurant or something, I will use my phone but thats it.

Also, if you have a large touch screen in your vehicle hooked to a separate CPU box you can also in some cases install an interface between the CPU box and the touch screen which will give you basically an HDMI input, MAYBE a VGA input and a couple video inputs with support for reverse camera. These also include one touch screen interface. These ~$200 units allow you to choose either the factory head unit or a separate unit or other options such as a remote DVD player or game console.
My 2009 CTS has a separate motorized touch screen in the Nav unit I have. It is not currently installed in my car and currently have my Radio unit all torn apart to do some "system investigation" on it. May purchase a second radio unit to allow me to hack this unit more. But it has a cable between the "silverbox" that contains the Computer and the touch screen.
With this type of interface I MAY try to locate a better screen as well since my current screen is like 800x600.
There is an Android box available that will plug into this interface but the interface is pretty basic so you could connect a variety of boxes to it. Just that this Android box is setup as a vehicle module. It too is about ~$200.
I can post more information if there is interest. The interface requires a system with separate screen and computer box but the android box could be used theoretically with any compatible screen.
