BlackBerry, Ford announce partnership to develop automotive software The Waterloo-based company will work with Ford to expand its cars' automotive and security software.
By The Canadian Press Mon., Oct. 31, 2016
BlackBerry Ltd. has signed an agreement with Ford Motor Co. to expand the use of the firm’s automotive and security software in the car manufacturer’s vehicles.
The deal will see a team of BlackBerry employees work directly with Ford to beef up how its technology is used to create safe, connected vehicles.
The head of BlackBerry QNX, John Wall, says the agreement is the first to cut out the middleman between BlackBerry and an automaker. Previously, automakers would buy products that use QNX software from other companies.
He said the company hopes to sign similar deals with other automakers in the future.
BlackBerry’s QNX software already powers Ford’s interactive SYNC 3 infotainment system and is in more than 60 million cars.

This does not mean that fords will become big Blackberry phones... Blackberry bought out QNX a while back and the latest Blackberry phones have the latest QNX. I believe this move is expected and may see other automotive manufacturers jump on board. QNX is the #1 OS for in vehicle entertainment due to a variety of features. Android is in some vehicles but QNX will run Android applications and is more secure while being a full feature RTOS out of the box unlike Android, Linux, iOS, or even most WinCE variations.
