Hi all, As you should be able to see by my avatar, Photobucket which I have used for my photo hosting has now decided to change their site so that linking to 3rd party forums can only be done if you pay a fee which amounts to AUD399/yr So I'd like to know what everyone else uses and how you have found it so I can make a choice and switch.

For avatar you can use this service built in to the forum, I also think it has some sort of photo area as well not sure though as I just have my own ftp I can send files from using dyndns.com and a free dns name twintower.homeip.net SNO

I have been using imageshack for several years now. They offer a premium member service to offer linking etc but I only subscribed to it once a couple years ago when they offered a really low price. Their regular price is 38/year US... nope, thanks anyways.
I actually just paid again last night for another year because they just cut the price down to 15 US on a deal.

Well it seems Photobucket have finally got the message from all of its users and have now offered a subscription of US$1.99/mth or US$19.99/yr for unlimited 3rd-party hosting, no advertisements and 10GB of storage.
Seems to be a cheap enough option for all those who have too many pics to transfer over to a free hosting site like Flickr and revive all those dead pics in forum threads.

I find using a 3rd party photo service leads to unsupported pics on all forums I have been to. Search for a post from a few years ago and invariably, there is a dead pic with a placeholder graphic from the dead / no longer supported photo service.

Flickr has now introduced paid subscriptions after being taken over by Smug a few months ago. While annual subscriptions are US$49.99 for unlimited photos, they still have free accounts but limited to 1,000 photos. You can read about it here

The way I do it is...
Click on the pic you want to share Click the Share icon (the arrow in the middle on the bottom right corner) Make sure BBCode is selected in the popup window Select the size you want in the dropdown (I usually use Thumbnail) Click the link URL shown in the top field and copy (CtrlC or right-click/Copy) Then you can paste this into the forum

OK, on Flickr, this is what I see. I had found directions similar to the one you guys responded with, but I'm stuck at the first step. In this instance, I clicked the "Share" Icon. I see there is a URL there, but it does not end in .jpg, and at no point did I get an option to select the size.

I think maybe you're sharing the folder instead of the image...

I don't think so. I'm on Camera Roll. I select one photo. Then I click share. If you look closely behind the box in focus with the Facebook, Twitter etc. links, you can see that I have one photo with a checkmark on it. I tried the download link as well, and it just downloads the photo to my computer, without asking about size.

Yes, from Camera Roll, Double Click on the photo to open it.
In the lower right corner "View on Photo Page"
Finally then, the icons show up in the lower right corner, "Edit, Share, Download"
Click "Share", now the right most tab of the Pop Up shows BBCode. Choose size and copy the link. The size in the post above was Medium 800x600.

Because the links are clickable to take you directly to the full-size picture I use the Thumbnail so that it doesn't use as much forum space and I can fit in more pics in a post. Then if people want to see it bigger they just click the thumbnail in the post.
