If any of you sit at a desk all day, you've probably heard about Standing Desks. Desks you stand at. The idea is basically: sit less, live longer. I've wanted one for a while, but I've hesitated since I was still doing my research.
Most of them are just table tops with legs that are adjustable either my electric motor or a hand-crank, or a hand-pump.
I saw some decent desks at OfficeMax. But before I decided to buy one, they sold out / discontinued locally.
Running out of options, I remembered there's an Ikea store local to me. So I checked their website. I hesitated for another week. Then finally I decided. I measured my trunk space, and then the wife and I went to Ikea. 30 miles to Ikea, then to aisle 4, bin 36. This should be easy.
NOPE.
The place is like a showroom labyrinth. I knew I was in trouble when I walked in and saw an escalator and a kids play area. Follow the other sheeple. If you want to remodel a whole room, there's someone to help. If you just want to buy this one thing, keep walking until the end. Keep walking. Maybe there's a way to go straight to their warehouse, but we didn't know what we were getting into. 30 minutes later, sweating in our winter coats, we're in the warehouse. We grab our stuff, and go through checkout. The checkout is ridiculous too. There are shoppers with mattresses and box springs just toting them around. The "impulse buys" along the checkout included tow-straps and tarps and rope, and other things you may need to secure your purchase into your pickup truck.
Anyway, we get out, it all fits in the car, we drive home. WE MADE IT OUT.
So then I've got 110+ pounds of parts to put together. I got a massive desk, 63" x 31" electric stand up desk. It raises up to a maximum of 53", which is awesome. One of the desks I looked at only went to 43", and I think the minimum for me (6 ft tall) is around 47". Glad I waited to do more research. It took over an hour to put together, but it's solid. The adjustable height and solid stance make me think it would be good for more than just typing on. Any project would be easier on this desk. It's almost too big for my 10' x 10' office.
I've got two 24" monitors and two laptops on it, along with keyboard and mouse which I maybe double-up on as well.
So far I love it. I worked most of the day standing until around 2:00 when I decided to lower the desk and sit. There's even a bluetooth app to control the desk for some reason. The desk wasn't cheap, but it's an investment in my new job.
The desk comes with some under-desk cable management, but no built-in power strip or USB chargers.
I've read that people buy special mats to stand on while at a standing desk. I'm going to look into one of those.
I'll be updating my review over the course of the week / month.
