Ok, I have been in email contact with Sean at MP3car...
Latest email is that they are pulling the site down and preserving the sql file of the data on the site.
They haven't decided what to do with it yet but hope to figure out what to do with it shortly. Apparently they were paying $500 a month for hosting costs and getting very little traffic. I offered to host on my host since I already paid for it and not using it. Not sure yet if Sean will also transfer the Vbulletin license or not if he gives me the sql. If not then if given the sql file I will have to import into another forum program and see how that goes.
Will let you guys know what happens.

Excellent. Also hoping all the information is somehow kept for future access.

I'm glad I found you guys here. I was sad to see mp3car die, too. I figured that some of you would stay active, though. I am grateful for that since my 'skills' are not in programming or even electronics.... more in general automotive and fab work on a hobbyist level.
Guys like me just look to see what is working and try to implement it in a project and don't contribute more than troubleshooting and testing within our capabilities and equipment available.
Without Clock, Sno, Enforcer, and the rest of you guys really doing the heavy lifting, there is no hobby.
The advent of sub-$500 aftermarket head-units with nice screens, good gps, working bluetooth and integrated radios that do so much with so little work helped kill the old website, IMHO. That and the fact that so many new cars, now older cars have capable and seamless interfaces that are hard to beat in the aftermarket DIY world. That sucks off a lot of traffic from getting new blood.
That leaves guys (or gals) who want to do something not done before and want to learn something new, or who like me, can't seem to find exactly what they want off-the shelf and are too stubborn to settle for something that won't match their concept and are willing to spend too much time and money to chase down that dream system.
I just got a new toy (even though I need to sell two old toys) and it needs a replacement for the outdated Garmin installed in the center dash. I am exploring options on it and wanted to brainstorm a replacement among you guys if you don't mind.
Anyway, glad I found you and hope to join in from time to time.
And congratulations Clock on your betrothal! Best wishes to you and the lucky lady.

Someone on the old mp3car forum has recently posted that his pics have been lost from his posts. I'm guessing the start of the forum being taken down has begun with hosted pics being the first to go. I don't expect those will be carried over if the whole forum is hosted elsewhere though.

If I host the forum I will put up everything I can. If they give me the vBulletin license as well I could put up an active site. I haven't tried getting on the system but I wouldn't be surprised if its already down and anything anyone is seeing is what is cached.

I managed to write a post yesterday without any problems, so it is still active.

I suspect it will be down in the next couple days since they don't want to pay another month fee unless already did. I don't know if they will decide right away what to do with the site but If given access I will try to get something up and running right away. I go back to school in a month from now so I am hoping it happens sooner rather than later.

The data was 15Gb+ so I assume any files and pictures will be a part of the full backup. Hopefully it's all there.

wow...only 15G? that doesn't seem like a lot given the number of years and amount of posts. I have to think that most people hosted their images by a third party like I did in my posts.

The email I saw said about 100 gig on the site. And vBulletin does allow for storing pictures in the database so I suspect that is what they did.
I have seen some conversion programs as well so we shall see how it goes. I have access to a bunch of free forum programs on my host so will see what they want to do. I will wait until the end of this week and see if they decided anything yet.

That really sux. I know they posted that it would be closing down but you think they would do a final post with a defined timelimit for some of the currently active members to get anything they wanted.
